　　Daddy just didn’t know how to show love. It was Mom who held the family together. He just went to work every day and came home; she’d have a list of sins we’d committed and he’d scold us about them.

　　爸爸根本不知道怎樣表達愛。把這個家維系在一起的人是媽媽。爸爸天天去上班，回家，然后是媽媽向他數(shù)落我們所做的一連串錯事，爸爸再為了這些事把我們罵一頓。

　　Once when I stole a candy bar, he made me take it back and tell the man I stole it and that I’d pay for it. But it was Mom who understood I was just a kid.

　　有一次我偷了一根棒棒糖。爸爸硬是要我送回去，還要我告訴賣糖的人是我偷了糖，并說我愿意幫他拆箱開包作為賠償。但媽媽卻理解我，她知道我只不過是個孩子。

　　I broke my leg once on the playground swing and it was Mom who held me in her arms all the way to the hospital. Dad pulled the car right up to the door of the emergency room and when they asked him to move it saying the space was reserved for emergency vehicles, He shouted, “What do you think this is? A tour bus?”

　　再有一次，我在操場蕩秋千摔壞了腿，一路抱著我到醫(yī)院的人是媽媽。爸爸將車正好停在急診室門口。因為那兒是專供急救車停靠的，醫(yī)院里的人就叫我爸爸把車開走。爸爸大聲吼叫起來：“你以為這是什么車?難道是旅游車嗎?”

　　At my birthday parties, Dad always seemed sort of out of place, He just busied himself blowing up balloons, setting up tables, and running errands, it was Mom who carried the cake with the candles on it for me to blow out.

　　在我的生日聚會上，爸爸總顯得有點不得其所。他不是忙于吹氣球，就是擺桌子，或做些跑腿的活兒。將插著蠟燭的生日蛋糕捧進來讓我吹滅的人總是媽媽。

　　When I leaf through picture albums, people always ask, “What does your Dad took like?” “Who knows? He was always fiddling around with the camera taking everyone else’s picture. I must have a zillion pictures of Mom and me smiling together.”

　　我隨便翻閱相冊時，別人總會問“你爸爸長什么模樣?”這還真說不出。他總是擺弄著相機為別人拍照。我和媽媽在一起微笑的照片一定多得都數(shù)不清了。

　　I remember when Mom told him to teach me how to ride a bicycle. I told him not to let it go, but he said it was time. I fell and Mom ran to pick me up, but he waved her off. I was so mad that I showed him, got right back on that bike and rode it myself. He didn’t even feel embarrassed and just smiled.

　　我還記得有一次媽媽叫爸爸教我騎自行車。我叫他扶著車子別松手，他卻說是時候了。我摔了下來，媽媽跑來扶我，他卻揮手讓媽媽開走。我真是氣得發(fā)瘋，決心非要讓他看看我的本事不可。我馬上騎上車，竟能一個人騎了。爸爸卻一點也不尷尬，只是笑笑。

　　When I went to college, Mom did all the writing. He just sent checks and a little note about how great his lawn looked now that I wasn’t playing football on it.

　　我上大學了，給我的信總是媽媽寫的。爸爸只知道寄錢，頂多附上一張便條，告訴我他的草坪現(xiàn)在修整得多么好，而如今我卻不能在上面踢球。

　　Whenever I called home, he acted like he wanted to talk, but he always said, “I’ll get your mother.”When I got married, it was Mom who cried. He just blew his nose loudly and left the room. All my life he said, “Where are you going? What time are you coming home? No, you cannot go.”

　　Passing through the Atlanta airport one morning, I caught one of those trains that take travelers from the main terminal to their boarding gates. Free, sterile and impersonal, the trains run back and forth all day long. Not many people consider them fun, but on this Saturday I heard laughter.

　　一天早晨去亞特蘭大機場，我看見一輛列車載載著旅客從航空集散站抵達登記處。這類免費列車每天單調(diào)、無味地往返其間，沒人覺得有趣。但這個周六我卻聽到了笑聲。

　　At the front of the first car – looking out the window at the track that lay ahead – were a man and his son.

　　在頭節(jié)車廂的最前面，坐著一個男人和他的兒子。他們正透過窗戶觀賞著一直往前延伸的鐵道。

　　We had just stopped to let off passengers, and the doors wee closing again. “Here we go! Hold on to me tight!” the father said. The boy, about five years old, made sounds of sheer delight.

　　我們停下來等候旅客下車，之后，車門關(guān)上了。“走吧。拉緊我!”父親說。兒子大約5歲吧，一路喜不自禁。

　　I know we’re supposed to avoid making racial distinctions these days, so I hope no one will mind if I mention that most people on the train were white, dressed for business trips or vacations – and that the father and son were black, dressed in clothes that were just about as inexpensive as you can buy.

　　車上坐的多半是衣冠楚楚，或公差或度假的白人，只有這對黑人父子穿著樸素簡單。我知道如今我們不該種族歧視，我希望我這樣描述沒人介意。

　　“Look out there!” the father said to his son. “See that pilot? I bet he’s walking to his plane.” The son craned his neck to look.

　　As I got off, I remembered some thing I’d wanted to buy in the terminal. I was early for my flight, so I decided to go back.

　　I did – and just as I was about to reboard the train for my gate, I saw that the man and his son had returned too. I realized then that they hadn’t been heading for a flight, but had just been riding the shuttle.

　　“I want to ride some more!”

　　“我還想再坐一會兒!”

　　“More?” the father said, mock-exasperated but clearly pleased. “You’re not tired?”

　　“再坐一會兒!”父親嗔怪模仿著兒子的語調(diào)，“你還不累?”

　　“This is fun!” his son said.

　　“真好玩!”兒子說。

　　“All right,” the father replied, and when a door opened we all got on.

　　“好吧，”父親說。車門開了，我們都上了車。

　　There are parents who can afford to send their children to Europe or Disneyland, and the children turn out rotten. There are parents who live in million-dollar houses and give their children cars and swimming pools, yet something goes wrong. Rich and poor, black and white, so much goes wrong so often.

　　我們很多父母有能力送孩子去歐洲，去狄斯尼樂園，可孩子還是墮落了。很多父母住豪華別墅，孩子有車有游泳池，可孩子還是學壞了。富人、窮人，黑人、白人，那么多人都輕易學壞了。

　　“Where are all these people going, Daddy?” the son asked.

　　“爸爸，這些人去哪?”兒子問。

　　“All over the world,” came the reply. The other people in the air port wee leaving for distant destinations or arriving at the ends of their journeys. The father and son, though, were just riding this shuttle together, making it exciting, sharing each other’s company.

　　“世界各地。”父親回答。機場來來往往的人流或準備遠行，或剛剛歸來。這對父子卻在乘坐區(qū)間列車，享受著父子間的親情與陪伴。

　　So many troubles in this country – crime, the murderous soullessness that seems to be taking over the lives of many young people, the lowering of educational standards, the increase in vile obscenities in public, the disappearance of simple civility. So many questions about what to do. Here was a father who cared about spending the day with his son and who had come up with this plan on a Saturday morning.

　　我們正面臨許多問題：犯罪、越來越多的年輕人變得冷漠無情、文化水平下降、公共場合卑劣猥褻上升、起碼的禮貌喪失，等等。我們有那么多的問題要處理。而這里。這位父親卻很在意花上一天陪伴兒子，并在這樣一個星期六的早上，提出這個計劃。

　　The answer is so simple: parents who care enough to spend time, and to pay attention and to try their best. It doesn’t cost a cent, yet it is the most valuable thing in the world.

　　其實答案很簡單：父母愿意花時間，愿意關(guān)注，愿意盡心盡職。這不要花一分錢，可這卻是世間無價之寶。

　　The train picked up speed, and the father pointed something out, and the boy laughed again.

　　Through the cold winter wasteland a man trudged, leaning into the harsh wind which spitefully tried to force him back. He was covered from head to toe in layers of thick clothing, layers of protection against the harsh environment. On he fought, searching, searching. He was working so hard. This must be the way.

　　在寒冷的冬季，以為男子在荒地中的前行舉步維艱，狂風肆虐幾乎要將他吹倒。他從頭到腳包裹著厚厚的衣物，用來抵御這惡劣的環(huán)境。他不遺余力的尋找著，尋找著，一定有辦法。

　　In the distance he saw what looked like steam rising out of the ground. It rose a few feet and then was quickly whipped away by the biting wind. He altered his course and turned towards the steam, gaining some blessed relief as he turned his chapped face out of the gale.

　　遠遠地他看見有蒸汽從地下往上冒，只有短短幾英尺。接著狂風拖曳著他往回，他改變了方向超蒸汽那里出發(fā)，感謝上天他開裂的臉蛋不再曝露在狂風之中。

　　As he got closer, he thought he could make out voices. Their tone was unfamiliar to him - musical, relaxed and warm - their melody enticed him closer. Finally he got close enough to peer through the mist.

　　There before him was a remarkable sight. In the midst of the frozen wasteland, cut into the ground was a large pool. Several people were in the pool, they seemed to be floating easily without any effort. As they saw him approach, a woman called out to him.

　　"Come in here. It is lovely and warm. You can just lie back and relax," said the woman.

　　"I can"t. There are no steps." The man replied.

　　“我不能，這里都沒有臺階。”旅人答道。

　　"Just jump in. It really is lovely in here. Come on. Theoure"s plenty of room for another." Another of the floaters joined in the persuasion.

　　“只要跳進來就好了，這里很棒，快點，還有不少位子呢。”池中其他人也附和說道。

　　"But what if I don"t like it, how will I get out? The sides are too high to reach up to."

　　“但是如果我不喜歡這里了，怎么出來?邊緣太高很難出來。”

　　"Believe me, you won"t want to get out. Come on. It is so good in here."

　　“相信我，你不會想要出來的，快點進來，這里真的很好。”

　　But he decided not to jump in. And that was a wise decision.

　　但他沒有往下跳。而這是個明治的選擇。

　　There"re many things and people in life like this pool. They promise you life can be easy.

　　生活中有很多人和事像這個水池一樣，他們像你承諾無憂無慮。

　　But in fact, they are traps that you can"t come back from.

　　但實際上，他們都是能讓你萬劫不復的陷阱。

　　Life is hard. Stay wise. And fight.
